Laboratory Evaluation of ASR Mitigation

Compared the performance of various ASR mitigation materials.

TCG has access to several extremely reactive ASR aggregates and worked independently with two companies to determine the performance advantages of using varied addition rates of either metakaolin or silica fume in combination with different lithium nitrate dosages to mitigate ASR. Thirty-nine mixes were produced using varying ratios of pozzolan to lithium nitrate with three different aggregates. The test procedure used was CRD-662-09 for 14 days and 28 days of testing.
TCG analyzed the data and was able to get consent to combine all the data into a report for FMC. The data show that there are advantages to using combination systems with very reactive aggregates.

Durability / Service Life Testing Service (STADIUM® Modeling)

The U.S. Navy is building a modern pier to service two simultaneous aircraft carriers in Portsmouth, Virginia. This structure has over 100,000 cubic yards of concrete and is expected to be completed in 2013. The U.S. Navy has required to service life of this structure to 75 years without major restoration activities. The U.S. Navy has employed a new performance-based concrete focused on a service life predicting software called STADIUM. This specification is proactive to allow the Department of Defense to significantly lower future maintenance cost.

TCG provided assistance to all bidding organizations to competitively prepare bids to likely meet the requirements of the project specification. Subsequently, TCG has been contracted to provide both the ready mix and precast concrete producers with services to form a specification-compliant submittal package. TCG has been contracted to provide project quality control testing and service life compliance with Skanska and Bayshore Concrete.

Concrete Performance Testing

The Sakonnet River Bridge Crossing Project is a $150M new bridge to replace the current saltwater river crossing. The bridge includes critical concrete elements that include: piling, pile caps, piers, substructure, superstructure, and approaches. The project is one of the Rhode Island DOT's largest projects under construction.

There were several phases of TCG services for the Sakonnet River Bridge Crossing project. These phases were:
• Design the concrete durability system (combination of concrete mix, reinforcing type, and surface coatings) for 75 years of maintenance-free service life,
• Design the concrete system and specifications for the mass concrete for the project.
• Provide materials testing services for determination of material quality (aggregates and concrete mixes).
• Provide bid RF1 and evaluation services.
• Provide conflict resolution consulting services.
Provide construction administration services including submittal reviews, quality control plan reviews, and general materials consultation.
