• THAT’S A FACT
If America’s 47,744 miles of interstate highways were paved with concrete, 10,989,557 gallons of fuel would be saved each day.
  • EAR TO THE GROUND
Service Life Engineering has become its own powerful field of study with immense impact on the future.
  • THAT’S A FACT
Concrete is a light color, which reflects from 33 to 50 per cent more light than asphalt, and can even lower the average town temperature by six degrees.

Cathodic Protection Systems Evaluation & Design: Petroleum, Oil, and Lubricant Pier, Diego Garcia

December 23, 2014

Cathodic Protection SystemTCG conducted a field inspection of the U.S. Navy’s Petroleum, Oil, and Lubricant (POL) Pier in Diego Garcia to evaluate the condition of the cathodic protection systems and assess concrete durability. The Pier is located on a coral atoll, south of the equator, in the central Indian Ocean. Samples and cores of the existing concrete were extracted for testing. The analysis included compressive strength, chloride concentration profiles, electrical resistivity, and petrographic examination. Two types of impressed current cathodic protection systems (ICCP) were assessed, including an underwater ICCP system for submerged steel piles and an above water ICCP system for concrete reinforcement. Following the on-site evaluation, specific repair and replacement strategies for the above-water ICCP system were developed. TCG also designed a galvanic cathodic protection system to replace an existing underwater ICCP system.
